More, I prithee, More!
I heard about Abney Park through the Rose City Steam group and the Seattle
Steamrats, just after the band's Seattle concert date in early March (darn it!). But
I plan to be at the next nearby concert. I would NOT miss it.
The Lost Horizons CD has some hauntingly good songs onboard. I especially like the
rollicking "Airship Pirates," which is a first-rate drinking song; and the ethereal
"World of Dr. Calgori," a piece that features Beatles-esque tight high-end isolation
on vocals playing over a rich sound stage, projecting vastness and spaciousness, as
well as some memorable hooks. "This Dark and Twisted Road" provides counterpoint,
with an almost western guitar riff that puts me in mind of a running horse. The
music has variety, shifting deftly from beer-hall stomp to middle eastern and
Spanish rhythm to carnival calliope to eerie wicked melodic flights of fancy.
Absolutely stunning vocals, keyboard and violin/viola stylings throughout.
This album has many moods, but it is fueled by the same energy and a fine
combination of musical talent, so it holds together very well. I highly recommend
this CD, and am looking for more good music from this band!
