The best way I can sum up my feelings about ""because i was in love" by Sharon Van Etten is that
I find it *enticing* but not *enchanting*.
Everytime I hear Sharon's voice I'm struck and drawn in my it. It is so distinctive and so *her's* it can't be ignored. So when I hear one of her songs out-of-the blue my curiousity is always piqued.
The problem lays with the nature of the songs found on this full length. Each song has the same set up: Sharon's vocals up front, her simply strummed guitar behind and the occasional other instrument buried beneath. Taken one at a time I really enjoy the songs found on "because i was in love".
But if the songs are all played together, well, by the third one I feel I've heard everything the album has to offer. They are just to much alike, to same-y. That's too bad. But after listening to this collection every few days for the last two months I just cannot get through more than two songs at a sitting. And unless I listen closely to the lyrics I can't really tell any of them apart.
