This is wonderful curio of an EP. Juan Prophet Organzation take gypsy instrumentation (accordion, violin, banjos etc) and marry it to (often THUNDEROUS) art-damaged (capital R, capital AWK) RAWK then run the whole thing through a pedal-to-the-metal blender of jazz-influenced time signatures.
The end result is like a down-home Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.
I'm sure these guys, ok... five guys and one woman, are sick to death of being called complex and strange. But, they ARE.
They are complex: they sift tempos and sounds at (white) lightening speed. Luckily they're amazing musicians who make this seem effortless.
They are strange. This group (formerly of Murfreesboro TN now living in Portland OR) are clearly wedded to following their unique vision and trailing after their personal muse... what they're going to do to that muse when they catch her I hate to meditate on.
The good news is that they pull it off. They may break a sweat while doing it but that's because they play music with such enthusiasm and abandon, not because they're out of their depth. Their energy and eagerness is infectious, the audience is swept along like a tempest in a tea cup... laced with whiskey.
I say drink up.
