The solo debut from Vinsantos comes across as a collection of snapshots from the future. From a time when all the young, stylish piano players have exchanged youthful wariness for sagelike, yet sardonic, world-weariness. It's music for when you go to a lounge not to meet friends but because you have nowhere else to go.
"A Light Awake Inside" also includes elements of glitter gone bad, of Ziggy Stardust gone to seed after crashing his rocket into Uranus one too many times.
All of this is presented with the off-hand aplumb of a drag show. A place where decadance is the in-joke we all agree wear for the evening, where people don't drink to hide their pain they drink to make their pain more fun at parties.
I still think that Vinsantos was the secret winner of the 2009 Seattle International Cabaret Festival. To wit: proximity (*intimacy*) made the performance more powerful. Sitting on the floor a few feet from the piano bench I found myself constantly struggling between wicked grins and stifling tears.
When you put on this CD you find yourself strikingly alone with Vinsantos. Be ready.
Good stuff.
PS: Any artist who can cover Pink Floyd tracks from two different times in that band's career ("Golden Hair" and "Sheep") and make them flow together this wonderfully deserves all of my respect.
